One Year On: How Our Bespoke Garden Rooms Are Holding Up
One of the first questions people ask when investing in a garden room is simple:
How well will it last?
It's an important question, and one that many websites answer with estimates or manufacturer guarantees. We'd rather show you what happens in the real world.
Over the past year, we've revisited several completed Vertex Garden Rooms to see how they're performing after twelve months of everyday use. These aren't showroom models or newly completed installations. They're real garden rooms that have experienced British winters, heavy rainfall, summer heat and daily life.
Here's what we found.
Why We Carry Out One-Year Revisit Visits
These visits serve two important purposes.
Firstly, they're part of our quality control process. Once we've completed a project, we genuinely want to know how it's performing over time. Seeing our work a year later helps us confirm that every detail continues to meet the standards we expect.
Secondly, they're an opportunity to support our customers through our three-year maintenance package. On a small number of visits, we've carried out minor adjustments, such as realigning a door after an exceptionally warm summer. This kind of seasonal movement is perfectly normal in high-quality timber buildings and is exactly why aftercare matters.
Across every project we revisited, one conclusion stood out:
Every garden room was performing exactly as designed.

The Builds We Revisited
Garden Room with Decking — Whyteleafe
One of our most technically demanding projects was this fully raised garden room, built on a steep 3:1 sloping site using galvanised piling rods and structural steel beams.
Twelve months later, the structure remains completely solid with no signs of movement. The integrated decking has weathered naturally, while the garden room is still used every day as a home office.
The elevated views across London were one of the client's favourite features from the beginning, and they remain just as impressive today.
Home Motorcycle Workshop — Tonbridge
This bespoke workshop was designed for a client with three motorcycles and no garage.
Unlike a typical garden office, this building experiences constant daily use, with motorcycles, tools and equipment moving in and out throughout the week.
A year later, the James Hardie Midnight Black cladding has retained its rich colour, the doors continue to operate smoothly and the workshop remains every bit as practical as the day it was completed.
Projects like this demonstrate that a well-built garden room can comfortably handle demanding working environments as well as quieter home offices.
Pitched Roof Garden Room with Mezzanine — Worcester Park
At 7.1m x 4.1m, this remains one of the most ambitious bespoke garden rooms we've built.
The dual-pitched roof, exposed tie beams and mezzanine floor create a dramatic interior that continues to impress long after completion.
One year on, the Thermowood cladding has begun developing the beautiful natural patina we'd expect, while the client continues to use the building daily as a home gym.
The vaulted ceiling, roof height and large bi-fold doors still fill the room with natural light, making it just as enjoyable to use today as it was when first completed.
Garden Craft Room — Crawley
Not every successful garden room has to be large or technically complex.
This fully insulated craft room was designed to provide a practical, low-maintenance creative space.
The fibre cement composite cladding still looks virtually identical to the day it was installed, requiring almost no maintenance throughout the year.
Perhaps the nicest part of revisiting this project was seeing how the client had made the space their own. New furniture, artwork and storage solutions had transformed it into a room that genuinely reflected how they enjoy spending their time.
For us, that's one of the best indicators of a successful project.
What Makes a Garden Room Last?
Longevity isn't achieved with a single material alone.

Do garden rooms need maintenance?
Like any timber structure, occasional maintenance helps keep a garden room performing at its best. Depending on the cladding you choose, this might simply involve cleaning or, in the case of natural timber, periodic treatment to maintain its appearance.
Is seasonal movement normal?
Yes. Timber naturally expands and contracts as temperatures and humidity change throughout the year. Minor adjustments, such as a door realignment after extreme weather, are completely normal and don't indicate a structural problem.
How long should a quality garden room last?
A professionally designed and installed garden room built using quality materials should provide decades of reliable use when properly maintained.
What We've Learned After One Year
Revisiting completed projects is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
Seeing clients continue to enjoy spaces that have become offices, workshops, gyms and creative studios reminds us why we build bespoke garden rooms in the first place.
Perhaps most importantly, these visits confirm that careful design, quality materials and skilled craftsmanship continue to deliver long after installation day.
