Garden Room with Decking

Client Brief

Our clients in Whyteleafe approached us with a challenging but exciting brief: to create a garden room with decking that could be used as a comfortable home office, positioned on a steep 3:1 sloping garden. The space needed to feel warm, usable all year round and make the most of the depth of their long, narrow plot.

Rather than undertaking a costly loft conversion, the client sought a practical garden room solution that would provide a dedicated workspace while capitalising on the garden’s elevated position and surrounding views.

The Solution:
Garden Room with Decking and Stairs

To overcome the steep gradient, we designed and built a raised garden room with a decking area, supported by a robust structural base and accessed via integrated steps. The decking creates a natural transition between the garden and the building, making it feel intentional rather than purely functional.

The 3m × 3m fully insulated garden room sits neatly above the slope, providing a quiet and comfortable environment for year-round use. The decking area not only improves access but also provides an inviting outdoor platform ideal for stepping outside during the working day or simply enjoying the elevated views across the landscape.

This garden room with a decking solution transformed an otherwise challenging garden layout into a practical, attractive and highly usable space.

Process

The Result

A cost effective alternative to a loft conversion whilst utilising dead space within the back garden. Extensive garden clearance took place here before the foundations were installed, opening up the back garden. The finished garden room sits beautifully within the sloping plot giving lovely views over London

FAQs

Why add decking to a garden room?

1

A garden room with decking creates a natural transition between the garden and the building, improving access and usability. Decking also adds usable outdoor space, making the area feel more intentional and providing a place to step outside, relax or enjoy views of the garden.

Can a garden room with decking be built on a sloping garden?

2

Yes. Garden rooms with decking areas are particularly effective on sloping sites. A raised deck can level uneven ground, provide safe access via steps, and allow the garden room to sit securely while making the most of elevated positions and views.

Is a garden room suitable for year-round use?

3

Absolutely. The garden room is fully insulated and designed for all-season use, making it an ideal home office or multi-purpose space. The decking area enhances the overall experience by extending the usable space outdoors during warmer months.

How do I get started with a garden room and decking project?

4

Getting started begins with a site visit, especially for sloping or complex gardens. We assess ground levels, access and layout, then guide you through design options to ensure your garden room with decking is practical, safe and designed correctly from day one.
