Pitched Roof Garden Room with Mezzanine

Client Brief

Our clients sought a versatile pitched roof garden room that could serve as a fully equipped garden gym, a relaxed chill-out space, and incorporate discreet storage. A key requirement was to maximise permitted development allowances, creating the largest possible internal volume without the need for planning permission.

Ceiling height was critical. The space needed to accommodate large gym equipment comfortably and allow for overhead exercises without restriction, something a standard flat-roof garden room would struggle to provide.

.

The Solution:
A Dual-Pitched Roof Garden Room

We designed and built a bespoke dual-pitched roof garden room featuring a hand-cut timber roof structure, finished in anthracite grey steel to complement the door frames and external detailing. The building is clad in real timber, giving it a warm, natural appearance that blends harmoniously with the surrounding garden setting.

A concealed external door provides access to a dedicated storage area, maintaining the main elevation's clean and cohesive appearance. A small hardwood step deck creates a welcoming entrance and strengthens the connection between the garden and the interior space.

Vaulted Ceilings, Mezzanine Storage & Natural Light

Inside, exposed timber tie beams emphasise the vaulted ceiling, creating a sense of openness, height and architectural character. A ship’s ladder-style staircase leads to a mezzanine level, providing additional storage space and a quiet area to relax after training.

Large bi-fold doors and two top-hung windows flood the garden room with natural light, making the space feel bright, open and comfortable for year-round use.

Designed for Multipurpose

This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can turn a simple garden room into a multi-layered retreat. The combination of an open structure, and the practical addition of a mezzanine makes this garden room both functional and a space for all the family to enjoy.

A Dream Space

Every detail of this build was designed with both practicality and with aesthetic appeal in mind. The pitched roof not only enhances the visual presence of the garden room but provides additional height and creates opportunity for different ideas. We also made sure to tie in certain elements of the design to reflect the aesthetic of the existing property to ensure the garden room compliments its surroundings.

Why Choose a Pitched Roof Garden Room?

A pitched roof garden room offers clear advantages over flat roof designs, particularly for gym and multi-use spaces:

  1. Increased internal height and headroom

  2. Improved airflow and light distribution

  3. Greater flexibility for mezzanines and storage

  4. A timeless architectural look that adds value

This project shows how a pitched roof garden gym can provide both practical performance and considered design, all within permitted development guidelines.

FAQs

What are the benefits of a pitched roof garden room?

1

A pitched roof garden room offers increased internal height, improved airflow and a more spacious feel compared to flat roof designs. It’s ideal for use in spaces such as home gyms, studios, or multi-purpose areas where headroom and natural light are important. Pitched roofs also create opportunities for features like vaulted ceilings and mezzanine storage.

Is a pitched roof garden room allowed under permitted development?

2

In most cases, yes. A pitched roof garden room can be built under permitted development, provided it meets height, positioning and boundary rules. We design every pitched roof garden room to maximise usable space while staying fully compliant with permitted development guidelines, so planning permission is often not required.

Can I customise the design and materials?

3

Every pitched roof garden room we build is bespoke. From roof structure and external cladding to doors, windows and internal finishes, the design is tailored to your garden, your needs and how you plan to use the space.

Do you offer site visits and design advice?

4

Yes. We offer site visits and expert guidance to ensure your pitched roof garden room is designed correctly from day one. This helps avoid planning issues, ensures the space is practical, and results in a garden room that genuinely works for you.
